Tamu Losar also known as “Gurung New Year” is the greatest festival of gurung or tamu community in Nepal. It marks the beginning of the Tamu Sambat or New year in Gurung Calendar Year.

Tamu Losar also known as “Gurung New Year” is the greatest festival of gurung or tamu community in Nepal. Tamu Losar marks the beginning of the Tamu Sambat or New year in Gurung Calendar Year.

Nepal is the country of many religions. Varieties of culture and traditions have made Nepal very unique and popular. The different festivals celebrated every year have helped the people to unite among themselves and follow the religious tolerance. Tamu is another name of Gurung community of Nepal and Losar means New Year. This festival mostly falls on December /January.

This festival gives the opportunity to gather with the family members and exchange greetings and togetherness. Gurungs communities organize rallies in traditional attires and cultural programs.

They also visit Buddhist shrines on that day. The days in Losar and the events are the opportunities to Nepal traveler to witness cultural heritages of the Gurung community. They also gather in a common place and takes part in different processions, feastings and greetings. In the villages, they gathered in courtyards to celebrate Losar.

In Kathmandu, Losar is celebrated in Tundikhel ground with colorful stalls and people flooding inside during winter. One of the traditional food Sel roti (Nepali Bread) and Achaar (Nepali pickles) is served in this festival. It’s a public holiday on this day.

Such festivals always reunite the family, friends and their loved ones and it also gives the working people time to relax and have the rejuvenated towards life.
