Have you ever dreamed of standing at the base of the world’s highest mountain? For many travelers, reaching Everest Base Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
But if you’ve started planning your trek, you’ve probably noticed that Everest Base Camp trek packages vary widely in price. Some cost much less than others, while premium options can be several times more expensive. So, what makes such a big difference if everyone follows the same trail to the same destination?
The answer lies in the journey itself.

Where you stay each night, the meals you enjoy, the amenities available along the trail, the amount of support you receive, and even how you return from the mountains all shape your overall experience. These differences can transform your trek from a rugged adventure into a comfortable or even luxurious Himalayan journey.
Whether you travel in economy, premium economy, or business class, you’ll arrive at the same place, but the experience along the way is entirely different.
At Ace the Himalaya, we offer three distinct Everest Base Camp trek styles: Standard, Comfort, and Luxury. Each package is designed to suit different travel preferences, budgets, and expectations.
In this guide, we’ll compare all three options side by side, exploring their accommodations, meals, amenities, transportation, and overall value. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of which Everest Base Camp trek is the perfect fit for your adventure.
Understanding the Three EBC Trek Styles
Before we dive deep, here’s the big picture. All three styles follow the same iconic Everest Base Camp route through the Khumbu region. You’ll walk the same trails, cross the same suspension bridges, and breathe in same air at 5,364 m.
Standard EBC Trek (14 Days): The classic, authentic teahouse experience. Best value for money, ideal for experienced trekkers or those on a tighter budget who want the real, raw deal would love Standard Everest Base Camp Trekking package.
Comfort EBC Trek with Heli Return (12 Days): The smart middle ground. Same teahouse experience as standard EBC trek on the way up, but a dramatic helicopter return that saves 2–3 days and adds a spectacular aerial finale over the Himalayas.
Luxury EBC Trek (14 Days): Luxury Everest Base Camp trek includes premium lodges, various food options, included Wi-Fi, and top-tier service from Kathmandu to Mount Everest base camp. It is for travelers who want maximum comfort at altitude without compromising the adventure.

Everest Base Camp Trek Accommodation
Reaching Everest Base Camp is only part of the journey. After trekking for six to eight hours each day through forests, valleys, and high mountain terrain, a good night’s rest becomes essential. While all three trek styles follow the same iconic route, the accommodation experience varies significantly depending on the package you choose.
Standard Everest Base Camp Trek Accommodation
The Standard Everest Base Camp Trek offers a comfortable balance between affordability and authenticity.
Your journey begins with a stay in a centrally located 3-star hotel in Kathmandu, close to the vibrant streets of Thamel. Depending on availability, you’ll stay at properties such as Hotel Jampa, Hotel Thamel House, Surya Heritage Hotel, or a similar-class hotel, giving you easy access to restaurants, cafes, shops, and trekking gear stores before your adventure begins.
During the trek, you’ll spend 11 nights in traditional mountain teahouses. These lodges provide clean, simple twin-sharing rooms with comfortable beds, pillows, blankets, and basic furnishings.

In the lower Everest region, including Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, you’ll generally stay in rooms with attached bathrooms, and hot showers are also available.
As you trek higher to destinations such as Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep, accommodation naturally becomes more basic. Due to the remote location, limited running water supply, and the practical challenges of maintaining hygiene, attached bathrooms and hot shower facilities are generally unavailable, and shared bathroom facilities become the norm.
The facilities such as Wi-Fi, device charging, and electric blankets are not included in the Standard Everest Base Camp Trek. Where available charging may be offered by some teahouses for an additional fee.
Wi-Fi is available along the Everest Base Camp route through Everest Link, but it is not included in the Standard and Comfort packages and must be purchased separately.
Comfort Everest Base Camp Trek Accommodation
Accommodation on the Comfort Everest Base Camp Trek with Heli Return is similar to the Standard package.
You’ll stay for in a comfortable 3-star hotel in Kathmandu in the heart of Thamel. During the trek, you’ll spend your nights in traditional teahouses along the Everest trail.
In Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, rooms with attached bathrooms are available, offering a comfortable start to the journey.
Beyond Namche Bazaar, accommodation becomes more basic, and shared bathroom facilities are common in villages such as Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep.
The biggest advantage of the Comfort package isn’t different accommodation, it’s the helicopter return after reaching Everest Base Camp, allowing you to skip 3 days of descent and complete the adventure in just 12 days.
Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek Accommodation
The Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek is designed for travelers who want to experience the Himalayas with the highest level of comfort possible.
Your adventure begins with a stay in a luxurious 5-star hotel in Kathmandu, such as Hotel Yak & Yeti or a similar premium property.
During the 11 nights on the trail, you’ll stay in carefully selected premium lodges such as Mountain Lodges of Nepal, The Himalayan Luxury Lodge, Dingboche Resort, or similar-class lodges wherever available.

These upgraded lodges provide a noticeably higher level of comfort than standard teahouses. In Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche rooms with attached bathrooms are available, along with comfortable beds, electric blankets, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities included in the package.
However, it’s important to understand that even on a luxury trek, the Everest region has its limitations. In high-altitude villages such as Lobuche and Gorakshep, rooms with attached bathrooms are not available. This is simply due to the remoteness of these settlements and the logistical challenges of maintaining modern plumbing at such extreme elevations.
Hot showers are included throughout the Luxury package. However, once you trek above Dingboche, taking a shower is generally not recommended, even if facilities exist. At higher altitudes, your body takes longer to dry and recover, and unnecessary exposure to cold temperatures may increase the risk of altitude-related illness.
Food & Drinking Water During the Everest Base Camp Trek
Food and hydration are just as important as your trekking gear when hiking to Everest Base Camp. After spending hours walking through forests, crossing suspension bridges, and climbing rugged mountain trails, a hot meal and a warm drink become something you genuinely look forward to.
While all three Everest Base Camp trek styles provide nutritious meals to fuel your adventure, the dining experience and what’s included vary depending on the package you choose.
Food during Standard Everest Base Camp Trek
Your stay in Kathmandu includes breakfast and a farewell dinner at your 3-star hotel.
During the trek, all your standard meals are included, covering 11 breakfasts, 11 lunches, and 11 dinners, along with one tea or coffee served with each meal.
Breakfast menus typically include a selection of:
- Toast with jam or butter
- Eggs prepared in different styles
- Porridge
- Tibetan bread
- Chapati
- Oats
- Muesli
For lunch and dinner, teahouses offer a variety of local and international dishes to keep you energized throughout the trek. Popular options include:
- Dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables, and curry)
- Momo (Nepali dumplings)
- Noodles
- Pasta
- Pizza
- Lasagna
- Fried rice
- Fried potatoes
- Sherpa stew
- Fresh daily soups
Drinking Water
Staying hydrated is essential during any high-altitude trek. Rather than relying on single-use plastic bottles, Ace the Himalaya provides safe drinking water using Katadyn water filtration systems throughout most of the trek.

This allows trekkers to refill their water bottles with filtered water. While at Gorakshep, where running water is not always available, you have to rely on bottled drinking water.
The boiled drinking water is not included in the Standard EBC trek package. If you prefer boiled water from the teahouses, it can be purchased separately at your own expense.
Food during Comfort Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return
The Comfort Everest Base Camp Trek with Heli Return follows the same meal plan as the Standard package.
Meals are served on a set-menu basis, featuring the same selection of Nepali and international dishes like standard EBC trek, along with one tea or coffee with each meal.
Drinking water is also managed in the same way as the Standard package. Katadyn-filtered drinking water is provided throughout most of the trek except in Gorakshep.
However, boiled drinking water is not included and can be purchased separately if preferred.
Food during Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek
The Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek offers a more premium dining experience from start to finish.
Along the trail, you’ll enjoy a variety of food options, allowing you to choose from a broader selection of meals in the menu. Premium mountain lodges at lower elevations offer a wider variety of Nepali and international cuisine, making every meal more enjoyable after a day of trekking.
You’ll also receive:
- Unlimited hot drinks throughout the trek
- Unlimited boiled drinking water included in the package
- Greater flexibility in meal choices
- Higher-quality dining experiences at premium lodges
With a variety of meals, unlimited hot beverages, and safe drinking water already included, you won’t need to worry about food or hydration along the trail. This allows you to simply relax, recharge, and focus on enjoying the incredible journey to Everest Base Camp.
Transportation and Overall Convenience
The journey to Everest Base Camp begins long before your first step on the trail. Transportation plays a major role in determining how convenient and relaxing the entire experience becomes.
Transportation in Standard Everest Base Camp Trek
Standard Everest Base Camp Trek includes scenic flights to and from Lukla. This traditional approach allows trekkers to experience the complete route both ways. Descending on foot offers another opportunity to appreciate the changing landscapes and revisit famous villages such as Namche Bazaar and Phakding.
For many experienced trekkers, walking the entire trail adds to the sense of accomplishment.
Transportation during Comfort EBC Trek with Heli Return
Comfort Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return introduces to the helicopter return directly from the Kala Patthar to Lukla and avoids spending several days retracing their steps.
Instead, you board a helicopter and enjoy spectacular aerial views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and the Khumbu Glacier before returning to Kathmandu.
This not only shortens the itinerary from 14 days to 12 days but also reduces fatigue considerably. For travelers with limited vacation time, the helicopter return can feel like getting the best of both worlds.
Transportation during Luxury Everest Base Camp Trekking
Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek preserves the traditional trekking experience.
Trekkers fly to Lukla and complete the classic itinerary, but with significantly more comfort at every stage.
Instead of changing the route itself, the luxury experience focuses on enhancing recovery and overall convenience through superior accommodations and amenities.
Duration and Overall Trekking Experience
Although all three options lead to Everest Base Camp, the rhythm and feel of the journey differ considerably.
Standard Everest Base Camp Trek (14 Days)
The classic 14-day itinerary allows trekkers to experience every section of the trail on foot.
Many seasoned trekkers appreciate this traditional approach because it creates a stronger sense of accomplishment and provides more time to immerse themselves in Sherpa culture and mountain life.
Comfort Everest Base Camp Trek with Heli Return (12 Days)
The Comfort Trek shortens the overall journey without compromising the highlight of reaching Everest Base Camp.
By eliminating the return trek and travelling by helicopter, you save valuable time and reduce fatigue.
This option is particularly attractive to professionals and travelers with limited annual leave.
Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek (14 Days)
The duration is similar to the standard package, but the experience itself feels completely different.
Better accommodations, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and warm beds improve recovery after each day of Luxury EBC trekking.
Does Spending More Mean a Less Authentic Experience?
This is perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding luxury trekking.
Some travelers believe that staying in better lodges somehow makes the experience less authentic. But authenticity in the Himalayas doesn’t come from uncomfortable beds or freezing showers.
No matter which package you choose, you’ll still experience:
- Namche Bazaar
- Tengboche Monastery
- Sherpa culture
- Prayer wheels and mani walls
- Yak caravans
- Everest Base Camp
- Kala Patthar sunrise
- The breathtaking scenery of the Khumbu region
The mountains don’t discriminate.
The same Everest rises above every traveler, whether they are sleeping in a basic teahouse or enjoying a premium lodge. You have to understand that luxury changes your comfort level, not your connection to the Himalayas.
Which Everest Base Camp Trek Should You Choose?
The answer ultimately depends on your priorities, travel style, and budget. Some trekkers are happy with a simple, authentic mountain experience, while others prefer added comfort, shorter travel time, or premium services along the way.
By understanding what matters most to you, it becomes much easier to choose the Everest Base Camp trek style that best matches your expectations.
Choose the Standard Everest Base Camp Trek If You:
- Want the best value for money.
- Prefer an authentic teahouse experience.
- Don’t mind basic facilities.
- Enjoy completing the entire trek on foot.

The trail, the mountains, and the unforgettable sunrise from Kala Patthar remain the same. What changes is how you experience those moments.
The Standard Everest Base Camp Trek offers incredible value and an authentic Himalayan adventure.
