Reaching Gorakshep

To reach Gorakshep, you have to follow the classic Everest Base Camp Trek route. This involves taking an adventurous flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the world.

From Lukla, you will trek for 5-6 days and cross villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, before you finally reach Gorakshep.

In Gorakshep, trekkers can enjoy a variety of food options including the staple Dal Bhat Tarkari (rice and lentil soup with a side of vegetables), momo, thukpa, as well as limited international food options.

  • Altitude Sickness: Given the challenging altitude of Gorakshep, altitude sickness is the most common problem faced by the trekkers staying here. Symptoms of acute mountain sickness like headaches, nausea, and shortness of breath is common. Without proper care, these can also get more serious and result in conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).
  • Limited Resources: Given the challenging location and limited accessibility, the resources in Gorakshep are limited. Water is scarce, and trekkers rely on bottled or boiled water. Basic amenities like heating and hot showers are limited.
  • Extreme Weather: Be prepared for a chilling journey when you are visiting Gorakshep as temperatures can drop significantly, especially at night, requiring trekkers to be well-prepared with warm clothing and gear.

Best Time to Visit Gorakshep

Like most of the trekking routes in Nepal, there is a best time for the Everest Base Camp Trek too, and given that Gorakshep is en route to the EBC trek, the same applies for Gorakshep.

The best time to visit Gorakshep includes the months of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) as during these months the skies are clear, weather is moderate, and they are the peak trekking seasons.

However, expect lots of crowd during this season as most of the trekkers chase these months for the best trekking experience. So, make sure to make your bookings well in advance.

If you are looking for a more quiet experience, the shoulder season like winter (December to February) could be a good option. However, the temperature at this time is very very low.

Packing Essentials for Gorakshep

When going to an area as challenging and extreme as Gorakshep, it is important to be fully stocked with all the supplies and essentials to ensure your safety as well as comfort throughout the journey.

Below are some essential items that you should not miss to pack:

  • Warm and insulated clothing (down jackets, thermal layers, gloves, and hats).
  • High-quality trekking boots and socks.
  • Sleeping bags rated for sub-zero temperatures (can be used even inside the teahouse as it is extremely cold).
  • Trekking poles for stability.
  • Altitude sickness medications and a basic first-aid kit with antibiotics, ointments, and all other essential medicines.
  • Reusable water bottles and water purification tablets.
  • Power banks and solar chargers for electronic devices.
  • Spare batteries for camera.

Tips for Trekking to Gorakshep

  • Acclimatization: It is extremely important to acclimatize well. Spend extra days at lower elevations like Namche Bazaar or Dingboche to prevent altitude sickness.
  • Hydration: Preventing altitude sickness should be your primary focus as you head towards Gorakshep. Therefore, you should drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and drinks containing caffeine.
  • Food: Given the remote location of Gorakshep, it is highly advised to stick to a vegetarian diet when visiting here. The meat might be old and cause some food related issues and even food poisoning at times.
  • Shower: It is advised to not take shower while you are in Gorakshep as taking hot showers in high altitude area can potentially increase the chances of you getting altitude sickness.
  • Eco-Friendly Practices: Carry out all non-biodegradable waste and use reusable bottles to reduce plastic waste. Strictly follow the leave no trace principle as the Everest region is already struggling with waste management problems as it is.
