The new concept of Home Stay Trek or tourists staying in local homes has helped develop and promote those remote pockets of Nepal where there are no serviced lodges or hotels. Home stays are a boon to local economy as local families can directly benefit from hosting visitors for a nominal fee. The visitor’s experience is also enriched as s/he gets to experience local culture first hand. Local home stays offers tourists a realistic perspective of the lifestyle and culture of local people.
This Home Stay Trek takes you to the remote villages of Gorkha, a mountainous district in Nepal which bore the full brunt of the devastating earthquake that rocked Nepal in 2015. The villages in this district are in dire need of help. Tourists can help boost the local economy by visiting these villages and staying with local families.
Home Stay trek takes you to some of the remote villages in Gorkha. During your trek you will be staying at the homes of local families. Trek through up and down trails, under the shadows of the mighty Himalayas and experience what life is like in rural Nepal. Staying in a traditional village home and interacting with the villagers will enrich your experience. Observe (or participate if you want!) as they go about their daily chores – working in their farm, tending to their livestock or cooking. Share meals with the family and exchange stories. Explore the village and go for nature walks at the community forests. Visit local schools and spend time with the students. Get amazed with the breathtaking sight of the Himalayas.
Ace the Himalaya is the only company organising Home Stay trek in and around Gorkha region till date. The money you have paid for the trip will go directly to the host families for providing food and accommodation. Take this trip, help local villagers in Gorkha and experience Nepali village culture.
In Kathmandu: Three Star Hotel
During Trek: You will be staying with local families in a shared room. Rooms in local houses are clean, warm and dry, with simple beds. Linen and quilts will be provided, but we recommend you take a sleeping bag with you.
During Home stay, you will be served fresh homemade typical Nepali food. Items in your lunch/dinner plate will include dal(lentil soup), bhat(rice), tarkari(curry) & achar(pickle). You may also get to taste the village staple ‘Gundrook- Dheedo’. Gundrook-Dheedo, a sugar-free dish made with wheat or maize and dried green vegetable, is highly nutritious and filling.
If you have any special dietary needs, please let us know so that we may make necessary arrangements.
Important: It is common in Nepalese culture to offer food when receiving guests in the home, however you are advised not to accept any food from local villagers other than the local house where you are staying during your trip. Oftentimes the food is not prepared hygienically. There is always the risk of getting sick. If you are visiting the house for local festival, it is recommended you go with your Guide.
Most village in Nepal don’t have a flushing toilet and a sewage system is non-existent. All toilets during the home-stay are squat toilets made of either a ceramic basin on the ground or few planks precariously positioned over a hole in the ground. There usually is a tap and bucket next to the toilet, which is used for flushing. You will need to take your own stock of sufficient toilet paper with you as it is not available for purchase in the region.
BATHING & LAUNDRY
In the village area there are no private facilities for bathing. There are spring water creeks, rivers and communal outdoor showers available for bathing, washing clothes and water collection by all locals. The water from these outdoor showers are a little warmer with constant running water: the run off down through the farms for irrigation. It is ok to use soap in the water streams when bathing. It is strongly recommended that you wear attire that is not very revealing, even if it is in a secluded area. Nudity is frowned upon and is totally unacceptable.
Washing of clothes can be done in any of the public showers, or in the nearby rivers and brooks. The most effective way of washing clothes is local method where clothes are soaked in water, laid out on a smooth stone, and rubbed with soap. The dirty parts/stains of the cloth are then rubbed onto the stone itself.
